Programs in this area develop young people’s capacity to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own well-being, set personal goals and live successfully as self-sufficient adults. Our vision is to empower youth to make healthful choices.  Youth are guided to improved healthy habits and decision-making skills, and a strong commitment to leading a healthier lifestyle. Programs and activities include: 

 

TriplePlayTriple Play, BGCA’s first comprehensive health and wellness program developed in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, strives to improve the overall health of Club members ages 5-18 by increasing their daily physical activity, teaching them good nutrition and helping them develop healthy relationships. The Mind component encourages young people to eat smart through the Healthy Habits program, which covers the power of choice, calories, vitamins and minerals, the food pyramid/my plate and appropriate portion size. The Body component provides sports and fitness activities for all youth. The Soul component helps build positive relationships and cooperation among young people. Together a nurtured mind, a healthy body, and a positive soul are unstoppable.

SmartMoves

SMART Moves (Skills Mastery and Resistance Training) is a nationally acclaimed comprehensive prevention program helps young people resist alcohol, tobacco other drug use, and premature sexual activity. SMART Moves features engaging, interactive, small-group activities that increase participants’ peer support, enhance their life skills, build their resiliency, and strengthen their leadership skills. This year-round program encourages collaborations among Club staff, youth, parents, and representatives from other community organizations. The program’s components are SMART Kids (ages 6-9), Start SMART (ages 10-12), Stay SMART (ages 13-15).

 

SmartGirlsSMART Girls is a small-group health, fitness, prevention/education, and self-esteem enhancement program designed to meet the developmental needs of girls ages 8-12 and 13-17. Through dynamic sessions, highly interactive activities, field trips, and mentoring opportunities with adult women, Club girls explore their own and societal attitudes and values as they build skills for eating right, staying physically fit, getting good health care, and developing positive relationships with peers and adults.

 

PP2MPassport 2 Manhood promotes and teaches responsibility in Club boys ages 11-14. It consists of 14 sessions, each of which concentrates on a specific aspect of manhood through highly interactive activities. Each club participant receives his own “Passport” to underscore the notion that he is on a personal journey of maturation and growth. The program includes a service project where boys learn the importance of giving back to the community. Passport to Manhood represents a targeted effort to engage young boys in discussions and activities that reinforce character, leadership, and positive behavior.
