Programs in this Core Program Area enable youth to become proficient in basic educational disciplines, apply learning to everyday situations and embrace technology to achieve success in a career. Our vision is that every member progresses to the next grade level on time and graduates with a plan for the future. Programs and activities include:
Project Learn reinforces the academic enrichment and school engagement of young people during the time they spend at the Club. This strategy is based on research demonstrating that students do much better in school when they spend their non-school hours engaged in fun, but academically beneficial, activities. Our Project Learn program is partially funded by Unity Foundation of LaPorte County.
Power Hour – Making Minutes Count provides Club professionals with strategies, activities, resources and information to create an engaging homework help and tutoring program that encourages Club members ages 5-12 and 13-18 to become self-directed learners. The Power Hour materials provide practical tips and Club best practices for recognition and incentives, behavior management, volunteer recruitment and training, collaboration with other organizations, and use of technology and the Internet. Our Power Hour program is partially funded by United Way of LaPorte County.
Indiana KIDS Tutoring helped 106 of last year’s Club members receive 30 sessions of free tutoring in reading and math. The average increase in reading was one grade level and 1.66 grade levels in math. The program consists of 30 sessions, each lasting approximately one (1) hour. Participants are expected to complete all 30 sessions. Tutors work with the child’s teacher to target deficit areas where the help is needed most and then individualize instruction.
Career Launch prepares Club members for the working world. Through Indiana KIDS Careers, our Club members embark on a journey to explore careers, make sound educational decisions and find success in the world of work.
